Microsoft Reveals and Retracts Xbox UI Mockup with Steam Games Tab

Microsoft has inadvertently revealed a potential new feature for Xbox consoles that could revolutionize how players interact with their PC game libraries. In a now-removed image from a blog post titled "Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox," a tab labeled "Steam" was spotted on various device screens, hinting at a future Xbox UI update. This update, as reported by The Verge, aims to allow Xbox users to view all their installed PC games from platforms like Steam, the Epic Games Store, and others directly from their Xbox console.

This unexpected glimpse into Microsoft's plans has sparked curiosity, especially since Steam and Xbox hardware have not traditionally been integrated in this manner. The image's removal from the blog post suggests that the feature was not meant to be public yet. According to The Verge, Microsoft is still in the early stages of developing this UI update, so gamers should not expect an immediate rollout.

The inclusion of Steam in an Xbox UI mockup is significant, given Microsoft's ongoing efforts to expand its gaming ecosystem across multiple platforms. Over the past decade, Microsoft has increasingly brought its titles to PC and other consoles, with games like Pentiment and Grounded available on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. There are also rumors that the Master Chief Collection might eventually make its way to PlayStation.

Microsoft's strategy to blur the lines between Xbox and PC gaming has been evident in recent initiatives like the "This is an Xbox" campaign, which showcases the variety of devices on which players can enjoy Xbox games. In an interview with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC stores like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be accessible directly on Xbox hardware.

Looking further ahead, reports suggest that Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, expected in 2027, will be more akin to a PC than any previous Xbox model, further integrating the gaming experiences across different platforms.
