Top 5 Eerie Pokédex Entries Revealed

Pokémon is renowned for its child-friendly nature, with all its mainline games receiving an E for Everyone rating, inviting young players into its vibrant world. Icons like Pikachu and Eevee lead the charge, yet beneath the surface, some Pokémon harbor darker tales. From kidnappings to chilling murders, the Pokédex entries of certain eerie Pokémon delve into horror, adding a surprising layer of depth to the franchise.

IGN has curated a list of what we consider the five creepiest Pokédex entries, though this is just a glimpse into the darker corners of the Pokémon universe. Notable mentions include Mimikyu, a Pokémon so ghastly it masquerades as Pikachu to forge friendships, all while plotting the downfall of the beloved mascot; Haunter, who stealthily trails humans through shadowy alleyways, waiting to deliver a fatal lick; and Hypno, infamous for hypnotizing and abducting children in the Pokémon animated series to feast on their dreams.

Drifloon

Drifloon

It was a joyous Friday for the young girl from Floaroma Town. Eager to kick off her weekend, she rushed through breakfast to embark on her favorite activity: flower picking. The Valley Windworks, known for its unique blooms, was her destination, despite the risks of venturing alone without a Pokémon. Upon arrival, she was captivated not by the flowers but by a shimmering purple balloon, Drifloon, drifting gently in the breeze. Enchanted, she grabbed its string, only to meet its haunting gaze—a yellow cross and two vacant eyes. As Drifloon tugged, the girl followed, giggling, until the string coiled around her wrist. The balloon continued to pull her higher and further until she vanished, never to be seen again.

Drifloon, known as the Balloon Pokémon, infuses a sinister twist into the imagery of a child's plaything, much like the horror of IT. While some Pokédex entries mention its origins from spirits, others ominously state, "It tugs on the hands of children to steal them away," and warn that "Any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing." Its body, filled with souls, grows with each abduction, transforming its mysterious allure into a chilling narrative.

Banette

Banette

As a boy's health deteriorated, his parents grew increasingly desperate. Despite the efforts of the best doctors in Mauville and Slateport, his condition worsened. In his feverish state, the boy whispered, "My doll," rejecting new toys in favor of a long-lost one. His parents discovered a tattered doll with glowing red eyes and a golden zipper for a mouth under his bed—a doll discarded years ago. As the boy reached for it, the doll leaped from the mother's hands and out the window, leaving the boy momentarily brighter.

Banette, the Marionette Pokémon, embodies classic horror with a tale reminiscent of Annabelle or Chucky. Its Pokédex entries reveal a doll transformed by resentment into a Pokémon, seeking revenge on the child who abandoned it. It haunts dark alleys, driven by a grudge, and inflicts harm through self-pinning, seeking to alleviate its rage only through the return of affection or the unzipping of its grim smile.

Sandygast

Sandygast

On a serene summer day at Big Wave Beach on Melemele Island, children built sandcastles until sunset. One boy, determined to perfect his creation, remained as others left. Unbeknownst to him, the other sandcastles morphed into Sandygast, a Pokémon with a gaping mouth and soulless eyes. Mistaking the Pokémon's approach for friendliness, the boy reached for a spade embedded in Sandygast's head, only to be consumed by it. His arm, then his entire body, was swallowed by the creature, leaving him trapped within.

Contrary to the joy associated with sandcastles, Sandygast's Pokédex entries warn of its sinister nature. It possesses sand mounds left by children and forces them to enlarge its body. Its evolution, Palossand, dubbed the Beach Nightmare, drags prey into the sand to drain their souls, leaving behind dried-up bones as a testament to its gruesome appetite.

Frillish

Frillish

An elderly woman relished her morning swim in the peaceful waters of Undella Town. Despite the choppy waves, she ventured further than usual, enjoying her solitude. As she tired and struggled against the current, a Frillish emerged. Mistaking its approach for assistance, she grasped it, only to find herself paralyzed by its poisonous stingers. As Frillish submerged, it dragged her into the depths, where she met her watery demise.

Frillish, the Floating Pokémon, belies its simple appearance with a deadly intent. Its veil-like arms, armed with poisonous stingers, paralyze and drag victims to its underwater lair five miles below the surface. The chilling realization of their fate haunts its prey as they drown in the ocean's depths.

Froslass

Froslass

A man, hearing a woman's cry during a fierce blizzard on a mountain, ventured out to help. Lost in the storm, he stumbled upon a cave for shelter. Inside, the freezing air was unnatural, and as he lit a lantern, he discovered the cave's icy walls encased frozen bodies. Before he could escape, Froslass appeared, its icy breath enveloping him, turning him into another frozen decoration in its chilling lair.

Froslass combines the myth of the Japanese Yōkai Yuki-onna and the Greek Medusa. Its Pokédex entries describe it as a woman's soul trapped in an icicle, preying on handsome men it freezes and displays as trophies. Luring its victims with knocks during blizzards, Froslass adds a hauntingly cold element to the Pokémon lore.
