With Piston, your car's diagnostic information is easily accessible, right at your fingertips. Are you seeing the Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated on your dashboard? Transform your mobile device into a powerful car scanner with Piston to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) associated with the issue, along with the invaluable Freeze Frame data. This data aids in pinpointing and resolving the problem efficiently.
To begin, you'll need an ELM327 based adapter, available in either Bluetooth or WiFi models, which you'll connect to the OBD2 socket in your vehicle. Piston simplifies the connection process with step-by-step guidance accessible from the Home page after your initial installation or anytime via the Settings.
Here's what you can achieve with Piston:
- Read and clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as defined by the OBD2 standard
- Access Freeze Frame data, capturing a snapshot of sensor data at the moment the ECU detects a malfunction
- Monitor real-time data from your vehicle's sensors
- Check the status of Readiness Monitors to ensure your emission control devices are functioning correctly
- Save the DTCs you've read in a local history for future reference
- Log in to store your DTCs in the cloud for seamless access across devices
- View charts of sensor readouts for a clearer understanding of your vehicle's performance
- Export real-time sensor data to a file for detailed analysis
- Verify your car's VIN number quickly and easily
- Explore details of your ECUs, including the OBD protocol or PIDs number
Some of these features are part of our Premium offering, which can be unlocked with a one-time in-app purchase. No recurring subscriptions are needed!
To utilize Piston as a car scanner, you must have a separate ELM327 based device, either Bluetooth or WiFi. Piston is fully compatible with the OBD-II (also known as OBDII or OBD2) and EOBD standards, ensuring broad vehicle support.
In the United States, all vehicles sold since 1996 are mandated to support the OBD2 standard. In the European Union, EOBD compliance became mandatory for petrol vehicles starting in 2001 and for diesel vehicles from 2004. For Australia and New Zealand, OBD2 is required for petrol cars manufactured from 2006 and diesel cars from 2007.
It's crucial to understand that this application can only access the data your vehicle supports and provides via the OBD2 standard.
