The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Exploring Retro Gaming on the Nintendo Switch: GBA & DS Gems
My approach to showcasing retro games on the Nintendo Switch is a bit different this time. Unlike some other consoles, the Switch doesn't boast a massive library of dedicated Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Nintendo DS ports. This means we're combining titles from both systems into a single list, mirroring their shared presence on the eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app offers many excellent GBA games, this list focuses on those available on the Switch eShop. We've selected ten favorites: four GBA and six DS titles. No particular ranking applies. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
We begin with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference, this GBA iteration is still a solid choice. A worthwhile comparison to the original, offering a potentially smoother gameplay experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the version, proving accessible even to those who typically avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
While the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a true Mega Man successor. Mega Man Zero launches an excellent side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry might not be the most polished. Subsequent games refined its mechanics, but the first game remains the perfect starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
Yes, another Mega Man entry. However, Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different gameplay experiences, both excelling in their respective styles. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The game's concept – a virtual world within electronic devices – is clever and well-executed. While later installments saw diminishing returns, this remains a highly entertaining title.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
This collection is worth playing entirely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it surpasses even the incredible Symphony of the Night on occasion. Its soul-collecting system encourages grinding, yet the addictive gameplay makes this a non-issue. Combined with its unique setting and hidden secrets, it's a true winner and a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. The DSiWare release of Shantae: Risky’s Revenge broadened its appeal significantly. This title cemented Shantae's popularity, leading to continued appearances across various consoles. It occupies a unique space, originating from an unreleased GBA game (which is slated for release soon).
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
One could argue this is a GBA game, given its origins, though it lacked initial localization. Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later entries are also strong contenders.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery surrounding your death. This is a captivating experience that deserves wider recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
The World Ends With You is arguably one of the best Nintendo DS games. The original hardware perfectly complements its design, making ports somewhat less impactful. However, the Switch version provides an excellent alternative for those without access to a DS.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. Each is worthwhile, but Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from replacing touch controls with standard buttons. However, playing all three DS games in this collection is highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
This franchise thrives on the DS/3DS systems, but Atlus's Switch adaptation is quite playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, the largest, offers a rewarding experience despite its quirks.
That concludes our list. Share your favorite GBA and DS games available on the Switch in the comments below! We appreciate your feedback. Thanks for reading!
