The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special
This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary library with enduring appeal, even seeing modern re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo's dominance, today they're enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are essential.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII catapulted Japanese RPGs into mainstream Western recognition, marking Square Enix's greatest triumph and significantly boosting PlayStation's success. While a remake exists, the original FFVII remains a worthwhile experience, showcasing its enduring appeal despite its dated polygons.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Although later entries became increasingly unconventional, the original delivers a thrilling, action-packed experience reminiscent of G.I. Joe, making it a highly enjoyable and influential title. Its PlayStation 2 successors are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's explore a niche gem. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics show their age, the vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid an all-Square Enix list, I'll limit it to this and FFVII. Chrono Cross, tasked with following one of the most beloved JRPGs ever, falls short of Chrono Trigger's legacy. However, viewed independently, it's a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast and an unforgettable soundtrack.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, nostalgia clouds my judgment. For non-fans, I recommend only Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. X4 stands out with its superior design and balance, a brief period of excellence before the series faltered again. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to decide for yourself.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! was initially assumed to be a first-party title like Crash Bandicoot, but it actually was. This unique platformer blends adventure game elements with precise action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins mastermind, it starts easy but becomes increasingly challenging.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Developed by many Lunar creators, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure contrasting the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' Lunar series. The collection's second game is also excellent.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

A PlayStation icon, Lara Croft starred in five PlayStation adventures. Quality varied, but the original, focusing on tomb raiding over action, is arguably the strongest Core Design entry. This collection allows you to judge for yourself.
moon ($18.99)

A lesser-known title, moon, initially Japan-exclusive, deconstructs the traditional RPG, even described by its creators as an "anti-RPG." More of an adventure game, it's unconventional and occasionally frustrating, yet delivers a unique message. Its English release is a welcome addition.
This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments! Thank you for reading this series.
