Master the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Parrying enemy attacks is incredibly satisfying in action games, especially when it leads to a decisive counterattack. This guide details how to unlock and effectively utilize the parry mechanic in Avowed.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

To parry in Avowed, you must first unlock the ability. Navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. Unlocking requires spending an ability point in any of the three core skill trees. Three ranks of Parry are available:

At level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

Parrying requires precise timing: block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue indicate a successful parry, staggering the enemy. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying

Not all attacks are parryable; some are indicated by a red circle and require dodging. Furthermore, only certain weapons can parry: single-handed, two-handed weapons (not in the off-hand), and shields (in the off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.

Benefits of Parrying

Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a highly effective defensive and offensive technique, particularly beneficial for melee builds. However, ranged-focused characters may find it less useful. Avowed's respec system allows for easy adjustments if you decide to change your build later.
