As adventurers delve into this new world, they're not only encountering magical items and various perils but also unexpected elements of romance, despite earlier statements from the developers.

In the lead-up to Avowed's release, Obsidian Entertainment made it clear that the game would not include a traditional romance system. Instead, the focus was to be on developing "thoughtful relationships" with companions. This was highlighted by Avowed's game director, Carrie Patel, in an interview with IGN. Patel expressed her personal support for romance options in games but emphasized the need for a full commitment to such features to ensure they enrich both the character's story and the player's experience. She stated, "We are building thoughtful relationships with our companion characters... So not something we're doing for Avowed, but I wouldn't say never."

However, early access players and reviewers have discovered a twist in the narrative. It appears that at least one companion in Avowed shows romantic interest in the player character, contrary to the initial declarations from the development team.
