Superhero comics have evolved far beyond their pages, now fueling not only blockbuster films and television series but also immersive podcasts and audio dramas. DC has taken a bold step forward with its latest project, *DC High Volume: Batman*, an ambitious podcast series that adapts some of the Dark Knight’s most legendary comic book arcs into richly produced audio experiences.

However, to fully appreciate the depth of this production, listeners are encouraged to explore more than just the main series. Alongside *DC High Volume: Batman*, DC is launching a dedicated companion show within the same feed. Hosted by writer and journalist Coy Jandreau, these episodes provide behind-the-scenes insights through interviews with cast members, creative teams, and even the original comic creators who inspired the adaptation. The first episode, released on Thursday, April 24, features conversations with Batman voice actor Jason Spisak and DC’s Creative Director for Animation & Audio Content, Mike Pallotta.

IGN recently spoke with Jandreau to learn how this companion series enhances the *DC High Volume: Batman* experience and expands the storytelling universe for fans both old and new.

What Is DC High Volume: Batman?

To understand the purpose of the companion series, it helps to first grasp what *DC High Volume: Batman* aims to achieve. This groundbreaking collaboration between DC and Realm reimagines classic Batman stories like *Batman: Year One* and *The Long Halloween* as full-length audio dramas. Narrated in a cinematic radio play format, the series stars Jason Spisak as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jay Paulson as Commissioner Gordon.

“This is the first time a project of this scale has been done,” explains Jandreau. “It’s a one-to-one adaptation of iconic Batman comics, presented as an immersive audio experience with detailed sound design, voice acting, and a unique musical score tailored to each character.”

The narrative begins with *Year One*, exploring the early days of Batman and Gordon, then transitions into *The Long Halloween*, set during the second year of the Caped Crusader’s vigilante career. According to Jandreau, the idea is to build a continuous, evolving story rooted in foundational graphic novels while remaining accessible to both longtime fans and newcomers.

“This format gives lifelong fans a fresh way to experience beloved stories, while also serving as a perfect entry point for those who may only know Batman from film or animation,” he adds. “It’s about rediscovering these tales in a new medium without losing any of their visual essence.”

For Jandreau, a passionate comic book enthusiast, the auditory transformation of these visual narratives brings a surprising emotional depth.

“Listening to these adaptations, you realize how much emotion and atmosphere can be conveyed purely through sound,” he says. “You can enjoy them alone, alongside reading the comics, or even share the experience around a fire — each method offers something different, but none diminish the value of the original material.”

The High Volume Companion Series

Jandreau’s companion series serves as a deep dive into the making of *DC High Volume: Batman*. It explores the creative process behind adapting comics into audio drama, featuring discussions with voice actors, composers, writers, and artists involved in the original works.

The episodes are available in both audio and video formats, with the first installment premiering on April 24—just after the debut of *The Long Halloween* arc. Each episode is strategically timed to coincide with major plot developments or emotional beats in the main series, offering viewers context and insight at key moments.

“We’re not strictly following a chapter-by-chapter breakdown,” Jandreau clarifies. “Instead, we’re aligning the companion content with pivotal scenes that allow us to explore character growth and thematic evolution in greater detail.”

When asked about his approach to interviewing talent, Jandreau cites influences such as *Inside the Actors Studio*, *Hot Ones*, and classic late-night talk shows. His goal is to create long-form, engaging conversations that uncover unique perspectives and untold stories from the people behind the scenes.

“I want to blend the in-depth storytelling of James Lipton, the nuanced questioning of Sean Evans, and the energetic flow of Johnny Carson or Conan O'Brien,” he says. “That mix allows us to go deeper into the characters, the performances, and the overall creative vision.”

The Future of DC High Volume: Batman

Looking ahead, Jandreau expresses enthusiasm about potential future guests, including *The Long Halloween* co-creator Jeph Loeb and acclaimed artist Jim Lee, both of whom played critical roles in shaping modern Batman lore.

“Jim Lee’s artistic influence and current leadership role at DC make him a must-have guest,” Jandreau says. “And Jeph Loeb’s work laid the foundation for many of the adaptations we see today. Having a long-form conversation with either would be invaluable for fans.”

He also mentions a strong interest in speaking with Tom King, known for his emotionally complex run on *Batman* from 2016–2019, including the controversial storyline where Batman nearly marries Catwoman.

“Tom King lived a life that mirrors Batman in many ways—he worked for the CIA and brings a deeply personal lens to the character,” Jandreau notes. “His insights into trauma, vengeance, and love through the lens of Bruce Wayne are incredibly compelling.”

Ultimately, Jandreau hopes the companion series will foster a more inclusive and positive fandom environment—one that welcomes both seasoned readers and curious newcomers.

“The internet can often feel hostile when it comes to genre content,” he admits. “But these stories deserve celebration, not division. I want this show to be a place where fans can gather, share, and rediscover Batman in a new light—without gatekeeping or negativity.”

With *DC High Volume: Batman* and its companion series, DC is not only expanding the reach of its iconic characters but also reshaping how fans engage with superhero storytelling across multiple platforms.
