Welch, BG3's companion narrative lead, lauded the scene as a "watershed moment," praising Larian Studios for uniquely responding to the desires of the game's fanfiction community. This unprecedented move, he argued, validated a significant player base.

The romance option with Halsin, a druid capable of shifting into a bear, wasn't initially planned. While intended for combat, his transformations became a romantic element, reflecting Halsin's emotional struggles. Welch credits the game's fanfiction community, specifically their desire for a "Daddy Halsin" romance, for shaping this narrative direction. He confirmed that Halsin wasn't originally conceived as a romantic interest.

Welch's presentation emphasized fanfiction's crucial role in maintaining community engagement, particularly in romance storylines. Welch revealed that the bear aspect was initially intended as a throwaway gag in a different scene. However, Vincke and Corcoran, while developing more substantial romance scenes for Halsin, decided to incorporate and expand upon this idea, making it a central element of his character arc.
