Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting

Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen a massive surge in mod usage following the release of Patch 7. The response has been phenomenal, with an astonishing number of mods downloaded in a short timeframe.

Larian CEO Swen Vincke tweeted that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. This figure was later surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over three million installs and counting. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke stated, highlighting the community's enthusiasm.

This explosion in mod usage is largely attributed to Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's official Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies the process of browsing, installing, and managing mods, enhancing accessibility for players. The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, provide modders with Larian's Osiris scripting language, enabling the creation of custom stories, scripts, and basic debugging, with direct publishing capabilities.

A community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" has further expanded modding possibilities, including a level editor and reactivated features previously unavailable. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, the community's ingenuity has pushed boundaries.

Looking ahead, Larian plans to support cross-platform modding, although Vincke acknowledges the complexity of implementing this feature across PC and consoles. The studio intends to prioritize the PC version initially, with console support following later to allow for thorough testing and optimization.

Beyond the modding boom, Patch 7 also delivered numerous improvements, including enhanced UI, new animations, expanded dialogue, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. With future updates planned, the community eagerly anticipates further developments, particularly regarding cross-platform modding capabilities.
