The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set for a modern revival with Breakout Beyond, a fresh take on Atari's classic brick-breaker. This new iteration, developed by Choice Provisions—the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series—maintains the familiar paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique twist with a sideways progression path. As players navigate from left to right, the core objective remains to break bricks, with the excitement escalating as combos build, accompanied by dazzling lights and effects.

Breakout Beyond isn't just about smashing bricks; it's about doing so with style. Special bricks trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to the thrill of wielding an actual laser cannon. The game promises 72 engaging levels, along with an unlockable endless mode that challenges players to compete on a global leaderboard. For those who prefer company, local two-player co-op is also on offer, making it a perfect option for shared gaming experiences.

Originally intended as an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development path took a turn when Atari acquired and completed the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. The Intellivision Amico, announced back in 2018 with a hopeful 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Despite this, Atari stepped in last year to acquire the branding and rights to Intellivision, though not the Amico itself.

Gamers won't have to wait long to dive into this new take on a classic. Breakout Beyond is slated for release later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
