Bungie is finally unveiling more details about its highly anticipated PvP extraction shooter, Marathon, with an exclusive gameplay livestream scheduled for this Saturday, April 12 (or April 13 depending on your timezone).

Last week, the Destiny developer teased fans with a cryptic tweet containing a peculiar 15-second video that launched an immediate detective frenzy as part of an elaborate alternate reality game.

The community discovered that hidden within the ASCII art was "a brief sequence from the original trailer," where observant fans could "spot the runner sprinting through a hallway from the initial reveal footage."

Additional clues emerged with messages like: "WHEN WILL HE RETURN ERROR ERROR ERROR HAS OCCURRED THE ENEMY RETURNED SYSTEM WARNING: PROTOCOL BREACH EVACUATE THE BASE IMMEDIATELY ALL UNITS REPORT TO STATION INITIATE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL 7 DATA LOSS IMMINENT GOOD LUCK, COMMANDER."

"Thousands of dedicated community members worldwide collaborated to unlock the gameplay reveal date for Bungie's new extraction shooter Marathon," Bungie announced, confirming the livestream times as 10 AM PDT (San Francisco) / 1 PM EDT (New York) / 6 PM BST (London) / 7 PM CEST (Berlin/Paris) / 9 PM GST (Dubai) or Sunday, April 13 at 2 AM JST (Tokyo) / 3 AM AEST (Sydney) / 5 AM NZDT (Auckland).

Originally announced in May 2023, Marathon reboots Bungie's classic franchise while retaining its signature atmosphere of "mystery, unease, and psychological tension." Set on the enigmatic planet Tau Ceti IV, players will control Runners - cyber-enhanced mercenaries engineered to survive extreme planetary conditions. These operatives will scavenge the ruins of a lost colony for valuable equipment, including advanced weapons and gear.

Despite the initial reveal, concrete details have remained scarce. While October 2023 provided a development update offering glimpses into Marathon's core mechanics, the studio emphasized the project's early development stage.

The livestream announcement comes amidst significant shifts within Sony's gaming strategy. Following the sudden cancellation of live-service shooter Concord, Sony has reevaluated its live-service ambitions. In November 2023, Sony president Hiroki Totoki confirmed plans to release only six of twelve planned live-service titles by March 2026, resulting in the cancellation of projects like The Last of Us multiplayer.

Bungie itself has faced recent challenges, including the layoff of 220 employees (17% of its workforce) in July 2024, coming less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs. Weeks later, reports emerged that former Marathon director Chris Barrett was reportedly dismissed following an internal conduct investigation, with Barrett subsequently filing a $200 million lawsuit against Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bungie.
