Crytek, facing challenging market conditions, announces layoffs impacting approximately 60 employees, representing 15% of its 400-person workforce. This decision, while difficult, is necessary for the company's long-term financial stability, despite the growth of Hunt: Showdown.

In a statement from founder Avni Yerli, Crytek cited the postponement of Crysis 4 development in Q3 2024 and subsequent efforts to transition staff to Hunt: Showdown as mitigating measures. However, these cost-cutting initiatives proved insufficient to avert layoffs, which affect both development and support teams. Crytek is providing severance packages and career support to affected employees.

Yerli emphasized Crytek's commitment to the future, highlighting Hunt: Showdown's continued success and the ongoing development of its CRYENGINE technology.

The news follows the cancellation of a previously unannounced battle royale project, codenamed Crysis Next, which was scrapped in favor of Crysis 4, officially announced in January 2022. The Crysis franchise, renowned for its visually stunning graphics and demanding system requirements (famously encapsulated by the phrase "But can it run Crysis?"), last saw a mainline release with Crysis 3 in 2013. While remasters of earlier titles have been released, substantial updates on Crysis 4 have been scarce since its initial reveal.
