"Cyberpunk 2077 to Use 25% of Switch 2's 64GB Storage"
CD Projekt Red has officially announced that the install size for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2 will be 64GB. This is notably smaller than the versions for Xbox and PlayStation 5, which require 100-110GB of space. However, on the Switch 2, with its confirmed 256GB of internal storage, this game will take up a significant 25% of the available space.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to launch on the same day as the Switch 2, on June 5. Gamers will have the option to purchase it as a physical 64GB game card or download it digitally from the Nintendo eShop. It's worth noting that while some new Switch 2 game cards may only include a download key rather than the full game, this is not the case for Cyberpunk 2077.
This raises an important consideration: how quickly will the Switch 2's internal storage fill up? The Switch 2 boasts a substantial upgrade from the original Switch's 32GB to 256GB. Yet, with games like Cyberpunk 2077 taking up 64GB, and other anticipated titles like the $80 Mario Kart World likely requiring even more space, storage could become a concern sooner than expected.
The solution lies in expandable storage. While the original Switch supported standard microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, the Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards. This means that existing microSD cards will not be compatible, and gamers will need to purchase new, more expensive microSD Express cards.
IGN's deals team has identified some of the best prices for Switch 2-compatible microSD Express cards. Options include 128GB for $44.99, 256GB for $59.99, 512GB for $99.99, and 1TB for $199.99 from brands like SanDisk and Lexar. Some of these are already in high demand, with certain models listed as "temporarily out of stock" on Amazon.
Nintendo is collaborating with SanDisk and Samsung to offer their own branded cards, which historically tend to be pricier than similar third-party alternatives. As the Switch 2 increases demand, other manufacturers might enter the microSD Express market, potentially impacting prices.
For more details on the Switch 2, you can review the highlights from the Nintendo Direct and learn how to secure your preorder on April 9.
