Expanding to Multiple Cities

Codenamed Project Orion, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel plans to build on the original by introducing a new city alongside Night City. In a recent talk at Digital Dragons 2025 on May 20, R. Talsorian Games founder Mike Pondsmith shared development insights.

Although he's not as heavily involved in this project as in 2077, Pondsmith continues to monitor its progress. "I review the scripts," he said. "Just last week, I met with various teams—they showed me new Cyberware and asked for my feedback."

He also confirmed that a second city is in development alongside Night City. He described his reaction while reviewing the design: "I understood the vibe they were aiming for—it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, more like a broken-down Chicago. I told them, 'Yes, I can see this working.'"

CD Projekt Red began recruiting for Cyberpunk 2 earlier this year. One notable role is for a Lead Encounter Designer, tasked with "creating unforgettable gameplay moments that engage and excite players".

The position also aims to introduce groundbreaking technology. A key responsibility includes "collaborating with the systems design team to develop the most realistic and dynamic crowd system ever seen in a video game".

Few official details have surfaced for Project Orion. But with Pondsmith’s updates and CDPR ramping up recruitment, the sequel appears poised to deepen the rich storytelling and immersive world-building of the original.

In related news, CDPR has released new footage of Cyberpunk 2077 running on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The developer highlighted optimization efforts for the handheld console, uploading approximately 37 minutes of gameplay footage to their website.

Earlier reports from Switch 2 events in New York and Paris indicated performance challenges, including noticeable frame rate drops. Business Insider commented, "Playing such a demanding game on Switch 2 is interesting, but it won’t be the optimal experience—I observed frequent frame rate dips."

Despite this, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port’s current state in an April 25 interview with Game File. He noted, "Memory constraints haven’t been an issue, and faster storage has resolved earlier streaming problems. This let us enhance other aspects, and we’re pleased with the outcome."
