DC Comics to Relaunch Batman With New #1 Issue and New Costume

DC Comics Unveils Massive 2025 Plans for Batman, Superman, and More

2025 promises a significant year for DC's iconic characters. Following Chip Zdarsky's conclusion on Batman #157, Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee's Hush 2 storyline will launch in March, setting the stage for a complete Batman relaunch.

This relaunch, announced at the ComicsPro event, features a new #1 issue, a new writer, and a brand new costume. Matt Fraction (known for Uncanny X-Men and The Invincible Iron Man) takes the reins, collaborating with returning artist Jorge Jimenez. Jimenez and Fraction have crafted a revamped Batsuit and Batmobile. The new suit ditches the classic black and gray for a vintage-inspired blue and gray design.

Fraction stated, "I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Batman. Jorge and I have a very superhero-forward take. We’ve got new characters, old characters—good and bad—everything that makes Batman iconic." Batman #1 is slated for a September 2025 release.

DC also revealed updates to their Superman titles. Supergirl is getting a new series and costume (designed by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau), written and drawn by Sophie Campbell (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). The series returns Kara to Midvale. Campbell cited 70s Supergirl stories, the 1984 film, and the CW show as influences. Supergirl #1 debuts May 14th.

Action Comics will see a creative team shift, with Mark Waid (Justice League Unlimited) and artist Skylar Patridge exploring Clark Kent's teenage years in Smallville. The series will focus on his early experiences with his powers as Superboy. This run begins with Action Comics #1087 in June.

Finally, Krypto is getting his own five-issue miniseries, Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton, as part of the DC All In initiative. Written by Ryan North (Fantastic Four) and drawn by Mike Norton (Revival), the series delves into Krypto's origin story. The first issue launches June 18th.
