Beginner’s Guide for Dead Sails

If you’re new to Dead Sails, don't worry. Similar to its predecessor Dead Rails, the game is straightforward – literally. You're the captain of a ship tasked with sailing in a straight line for 10 thousand meters between towns, ultimately aiming to reach a goal of 100k meters. The key is to keep moving, avoid running out of fuel, and stay alive. Simple, right?

Before You Set Sail

The in-game lobby before starting a round offers helpful resources, albeit at a cost. As a new player, you begin with 15 Dabloons, the game's currency. While it's tempting to spend on boats or items like bandages and weapons, you'll find plenty of these in-game. Instead, use your Dabloons wisely.

How To Choose A Class

We recommend spending your 15 Dabloons on a class. These are in-game perks obtained through loot boxes, with each purchase costing 3 Dabloons. You might get a class you like on your first try, such as the Pirate or Gunslinger, both great Common and Uncommon options. Your choice depends on your play style. For a detailed breakdown, check out our Dead Sails Class Tierlist.

What To Do In Towns

Upon joining a round, you spawn in a town where your ship is docked. These towns appear every 10 thousand meters sailed and serve as safe spots. They offer various amenities:

  • Trading Hut: Sell collected items.
  • General Store: Purchase items to aid your journey.
  • Hospital: Heal yourself.
  • Gun Shop: Buy guns and ammunition.
  • Sheriff’s: Earn bounty money from pirate and creature corpses.

Starting with a blunt weapon like a pickaxe or hammer, there's no immediate need for a firearm. Instead, prioritize buying coal, spending all your money on as much as you can. Fuel is crucial in Dead Sails; the game ends if you can't move your ship.

Dead Sails Tips & Tricks

The gameplay is simple, yet you'll encounter various buildings and structures, and face attacks from undead creatures. Here are the key tips to master the game.

Tips For Never Running Out Of Fuel

In Dead Sails, coal powers your ship, with each piece adding 20 percent more fuel. You could finish the game by buying 5 coal pieces in every town, but there's more to it. Collectible items marked "fuel" offer a 5 percent increase. However, the most efficient way to fuel up, aside from coal, is using undead corpses. Kill attackers and use their bodies to keep your ship running.

How To Survive The Night

Like Dead Rails, Dead Sails becomes significantly harder at night due to lower visibility. If you die, it's game over. Ideally, spend the night in town for safety. Alternatively, purchase Barbed Wire from a shop and mount it on your ship to keep mobs at bay. Without Barbed Wire, pause your journey and attack any approaching creatures.

Which Weapon To Choose

Weapon choice depends on preference. If you prefer melee, the starting hammer or pickaxe might suffice. However, as you progress, you'll need stronger weapons for tougher enemies. A shotgun is ideal for its higher damage, perfect for unexpected combat situations. Early on, a revolver is a good choice to familiarize yourself with firearms, often found in buildings.

Best Items To Collect

Every collected item can be sold, starting with junk worth 3 or 5 cash per item. Given your inventory limit of 10 items, focus on valuable items:

  • Moyai and Bars: Available in diamond, gold, and silver, these are lucrative.
  • Healing Packs: Keep these for emergencies, though they can be sold.
  • Crosses: Sell for 35 cash or use against the undead.
  • Weapons: Use or sell as needed.
  • Robot Head: Found in houses and banks, sells for 45 cash.
  • Holy Water: Found in churches, sells for 25 cash.
  • Gold Llama: A rare, high-value item selling for 150 cash.

You can stack items on your boat, but they'll fall off if not welded. Place an item and click the weld button (Z on the keyboard) to secure it.

And that's the beginner's guide to Dead Sails! Follow these tips to become the best captain on the seas – or in this case, the small, canal-like river. For a gameplay boost, check out our Dead Sails codes.
