Conquering Zhang Jiao, the leader of the Yellow Turbans, is a pivotal early challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. This guide outlines strategies for victory.

Conquering Zhang Jiao: Phase 1

The initial encounter is a one-on-one duel in a vast wasteland. Zhang Jiao employs sorcery, hurling stones across the arena. His attacks vary based on your distance. Close range brings four stones, demanding swift evasion. At a distance, he unleashes twice as many, thrown in pairs – easily dodged by circling him. Maintain a safe distance when he summons a large volley to avoid heavy damage.

While primarily a ranged fighter, Zhang Jiao possesses close-quarters combos that can be parried, and an area-of-effect (AOE) attack to knock you back. A glowing white aura signals his AOE; retreat to avoid damage. He also uses unblockable attacks (red aura), summoning numerous rocks or clones. The best strategy here is to maintain distance until these attacks conclude.

A sword is your best weapon for this phase, dealing significantly more damage than spears or gauntlets. Resource management is key. You likely have limited healing opportunities (around four uses depending on skill upgrades). Remember the meat buns near the arena entrance – use them strategically between attacks.

Conquering Zhang Jiao: Phase 2

Activating Musou Rage triggers Phase 2, introducing Yellow Turban reinforcements alongside your own army. This provides breathing room and another chance to replenish your health using the meat buns. Zhang Jiao introduces tornados; be mindful of their disruptive force while engaging his troops.

Zhang Jiao will attempt a Grand Tactic, requiring you to eliminate 300 soldiers within a short timeframe to avoid a devastating counterattack. He'll also summon lightning strikes. Observe the shrinking ring on the ground to anticipate and evade these strikes. Musou Mode (basic, not Rage) is highly effective for quickly eliminating large groups of soldiers during the Grand Tactic.

Foiling Zhang Jiao's Grand Tactic twice returns him to the battlefield with Phase 1 tactics. However, with your army's support, this final phase should be relatively straightforward.
