The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake Details Reportedly Leak Online

Feb 26,25(2 weeks ago)

Rumors of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake, slated for a 2025 release, have surfaced online, with purported details leaked. Gaming news outlet Mp1st reported that a former employee of Virtuos, a video game support studio, inadvertently disclosed information about the unannounced project. Microsoft declined to comment when contacted by IGN.

Mp1st's report claims Virtuos utilized Unreal Engine 5 for the remake, suggesting a substantial overhaul rather than a simple remaster. Alleged gameplay modifications include adjustments to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reactions, and the HUD.

The Blocking system, according to Mp1st, was redesigned with inspiration from action and Soulslike games, addressing criticisms of the original's "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons are reportedly enhanced, damage calculations refined, and Stamina depletion-induced knockdowns made less frequent. A revamped HUD aims for improved clarity, while added hit reactions and modernized Archery (in both first and third-person views) further enhance gameplay.

The possibility of an Oblivion remaster first emerged in 2023, revealed in documents from the FTC vs. Microsoft trial concerning the Activision Blizzard acquisition. A July 2020 list, compiled before Microsoft's purchase of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, included several unannounced Bethesda titles, many of which have since been delayed, altered, or canceled. The original list included an Oblivion remaster, but the project's scope may have evolved into a full-fledged remake.

The platform lineup for the Oblivion remake remains unconfirmed. Given Microsoft's current multiplatform strategy and the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the game could potentially launch on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Leaker NateTheHate, who recently predicted the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal date, claims the Oblivion remake is set for a June release. This aligns with rumored Switch 2 launch timelines, suggesting a potential simultaneous release.

Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Developer Direct next week will feature id Software revealing more about Doom: The Dark Ages. While Microsoft has teased a new game from an undisclosed developer, it's unlikely to be Oblivion. Windows Central's Jez Corden hints at a new entry in a long-standing Japanese IP.
