ESA on Trump Tariffs: 'Not Just About Switch 2'

May 06,25(3 months ago)

The past 48 hours have been a whirlwind for both economics enthusiasts and Nintendo fans alike. On Wednesday, the gaming world was hit with the news that the Nintendo Switch 2 would be priced at a steep $450 in the United States. Analysts pointed to a mix of factors driving this high price, including anticipated tariffs, inflation, competition, and the costs of components.

Then, the Trump Administration escalated the situation last night by announcing sweeping 10% tariffs on nearly every country, with significantly higher tariffs targeting nations like China, the EU, Japan, Vietnam, Canada, Mexico, and others. In a swift response, China announced a 34% reciprocal tariff on all U.S. goods this morning. Amidst this turmoil, Nintendo made the surprising decision to postpone pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S., citing the need to assess the impact of these tariffs on their plans.

This unprecedented scenario is leaving everyone, from industry insiders to the general public, grappling with its implications. Just 30 minutes before Nintendo's announcement, I had a conversation with Aubrey Quinn, a spokesperson for the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), to discuss the broader impact of these tariffs on the gaming industry.

The ESA, like many others, is still piecing together how these developments will unfold. Quinn mentioned that while they anticipated some form of tariffs due to President Trump's previous actions and campaign rhetoric, the exact nature and extent of the retaliation, especially from China, remains uncertain. However, the ESA is clear on one thing: these tariffs are poised to negatively affect the video game industry.

"We really are, at this point, just watching and trying not to have knee-jerk reactions, because we don't think that what President Trump announced this week is the end of the story, but what was announced this week and the tariffs as outlined, we do expect these tariffs will have a real and detrimental impact on the industry and the hundreds of millions of Americans who love to play games," Quinn stated. The ESA aims to collaborate with the administration and other elected officials to find solutions that safeguard U.S. industries, businesses, and gamers.

Quinn elaborated that the impact of tariffs would not be limited to just the pricing of gaming systems. "It's hard to imagine a world where tariffs like these don’t impact pricing," she said, adding that consumer spending, company revenue, job security, investment in research and development, and even the design of future consoles could be affected. "The entire consumer ecosystem is connected," she emphasized.

In response to these challenges, the ESA has already taken initial steps, though Quinn admitted that progress has been slow. Despite the tariffs being anticipated, the new Trump administration, largely composed of recently appointed officials, has made it difficult to leverage previous relationships. Nonetheless, the ESA is actively working to establish new connections and ensure that policymakers understand the potential harm to businesses and consumers.

Quinn highlighted the ESA's recent efforts, including joining a coalition of trade associations to voice concerns to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer before the tariff announcements. The ESA is also seeking meetings with legislators and administration members to address these issues.

When asked if these efforts were yielding results, Quinn confirmed that conversations were happening at various levels of government, though not yet with the President himself. The ESA is collaborating with other associations to emphasize that the impact of these tariffs extends beyond the gaming industry to affect all consumer products.

For concerned consumers, Quinn suggested reaching out to their elected representatives through letters, calls, emails, or social media to express their worries. "I think the more members of government, elected officials, and their staff who hear that their constituents are concerned, the more likely we are to be heard and to potentially make an impact," she advised.

Nintendo's decision to pause pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 came shortly after our discussion. While the ESA does not comment on actions taken by individual companies, Quinn noted the unfortunate timing of the Switch 2 reveal coinciding with the tariff announcement. She stressed that the impact of these tariffs would be felt across the entire gaming industry, affecting not just consoles but also VR headsets, smartphones, and PC gaming. "This is going to have an impact," she reiterated, emphasizing that the effects would be felt industry-wide, regardless of the company involved.
