"Evil Dead: Game Removed from Stores 3 Years Post-Launch, Servers Stay Online"
Evil Dead: The Game, the asymmetric multiplayer title inspired by the beloved action horror franchise, is no longer available for purchase. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game received an 8/10 in IGN’s review, praised as a "compelling and exhilarating" experience, albeit "rough around the edges" — much like the horror/comedies it emulates.
Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition a year later, the game struggled to retain player interest. The cancellation of the Nintendo Switch version and the halt in content development in September 2023 signaled the beginning of the end. Now, three years post-launch, Evil Dead: The Game has been removed from digital storefronts by its publisher, Saber Interactive. However, the servers will remain active, allowing existing owners to continue enjoying the game.
Saber Interactive made the announcement on the game's Steam page, stating:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision to pull the game from sale has been met with disappointment from the community, as evidenced by the negative reviews on its Steam page. Many players feel the game is now effectively dead, contributing to its overall 'mixed' user review rating. A poignant positive review from a player with over 380 hours of gameplay reads, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, fresh off the success of last year's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is not slowing down. The studio has several licensed movie games in the pipeline, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game, as well as Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
