While Cain has undoubtedly fielded this question countless times, he's clear about his criteria for new projects: novelty. He's not interested in simply revisiting familiar territory.

Cain's Approach to Game Development

Cain emphasizes the importance of new experiences. Minor additions, like a new perk system, wouldn't entice him. He's driven by unique and innovative game development challenges. A truly revolutionary concept, however, could change his mind.

His past demonstrates this preference. He passed on Fallout 2 after three years on the original, seeking fresh challenges. His subsequent work shows a diverse portfolio, including using Valve's Source Engine for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, venturing into space-faring sci-fi with The Outer Worlds, and exploring the fantasy RPG genre with Arcanum.

Financial incentives aren't his primary motivator. While fair compensation is expected, the project's inherent uniqueness and potential for new experiences are paramount. A return to Fallout remains possible, but only if Bethesda presents a concept that sparks his curiosity and offers a genuinely novel development experience.
