Frankenstein: A Brief Timeline of Guillermo del Toro’s 20-Years-in-the-Making Horror Movie
Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein might just rival that of the legendary Dr. Frankenstein himself. At this week's Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared an exciting video message, teasing his long-awaited adaptation of the classic tale. Although fans won't see a trailer until this summer, Netflix delighted viewers with a first-look image of Oscar Isaac portraying the iconic mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein.
In the video, as reported by Variety, del Toro expressed his deep connection to the project: “This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein.” As he spoke, he gestured towards the array of Frankenstein figures and collectibles adorning his famous Bleak House's Frankenstein room, underscoring his lifelong fascination.
Del Toro also offered a glimpse into the film's world, showcasing scenes featuring Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, who plays a sophisticated aristocrat, and Jacob Elordi as the monstrous creation, characterized by long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a striking red glint in his eyes. While this footage remains exclusive and not available online, it promises a visually captivating adaptation.
Reflecting on the profound impact of the character, del Toro shared, "You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this." His statement highlights the deeply personal nature of this project, a sentiment that resonates throughout his career, from Pan's Labyrinth to Hellboy.
Del Toro's journey to bring Frankenstein to life has indeed been a long one, filled with dedication and perseverance. As we eagerly await further updates on this much-anticipated film, it's clear that his vision for this adaptation is not just a project, but a lifelong dream come true.
