Geralt of Rivia Returns to The Witcher 4, But Not in the Lead Role

Voice actor Doug Cockle confirms the return of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher 4, but clarifies that the iconic Witcher will not be the protagonist this time. While Geralt's presence is confirmed, the narrative focus will shift to new characters. Cockle stated in an interview with Fall Damage that the game "won't focus on Geralt; it's not about him this time."

The identity of the new protagonist remains a mystery, fueling speculation among fans. One intriguing clue comes from a two-year-old Unreal Engine 5 teaser showcasing a Cat School medallion buried in the snow. This, coupled with hints from Gwent: The Witcher Card Game suggesting surviving members of the Cat School, points towards a potential new protagonist from this lineage.

Another strong contender for the lead role is Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter. Supporting this theory is Ciri's acquisition of a Cat School medallion in the Witcher books and the game's subtle use of a Cat medallion in place of Geralt's Wolf medallion when players control Ciri in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Her potential role could range from a central protagonist to a supporting mentor figure, similar to Vessemir.

The Witcher 4's Development: A Large-Scale Undertaking

The Witcher 4, codenamed Polaris, officially began development in 2023, employing over 400 developers—making it CD Projekt Red's largest project to date. Game director Sebastian Kalemba, in an interview with Lega Nerd, highlighted the game's aim to attract new players while satisfying long-time fans. Despite the substantial investment, CEO Adam Kiciński previously indicated a release date at least three years out, citing the ambitious scope and the development of new technology within Unreal Engine 5.
