James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. He revealed he's already writing the script for his next DCU film after Superman. Gunn's keeping incredibly busy!

While he remained tight-lipped about the project—an announcement likely won't come until after Superman hits theaters in July—we've got some ideas for his next endeavor. Which franchises and characters best suit his distinctive style? Which films should be prioritized as Gunn and Peter Safran build this new shared universe? Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Despite Batman's frequent big-screen appearances, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates considerable excitement. This film reboots Batman, introducing the DCU's Caped Crusader. Unlike previous iterations, it focuses on the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian.

However, uncertainty surrounds The Brave and the Bold. Progress seems slow, and Andy Muschietti's involvement remains questionable post-presentation. Introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's presents a significant challenge.

The DCU needs a Batman. He's crucial, and getting this right is paramount. If Muschietti departs, Gunn stepping in to ensure the project's success (a possibility that already seems to be unfolding) would be beneficial. Gunn's skill at portraying emotional father-son relationships in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy suggests he could masterfully handle Bruce and Damian's dynamic.

The Flash

The Flash is vital to any shared DC Universe. A core Justice League member, he's central to multiverse stories. However, his live-action history is rocky. The CW series showcases a successful ensemble approach (despite its later decline), while Ezra Miller's DCEU portrayal and the box office failure of The Flash movie left the character tarnished.

The Flash needs a fresh start, avoiding overused narratives like Flashpoint. The film should spotlight Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), preventing Batman from overshadowing him.

Gunn's expertise in dynamic action and ability to connect audiences with heroes (as seen in the Guardians movies) makes him ideal for a Flash film.

The Authority

Gunn was candid about The Authority's challenges, stating difficulty in finding an angle that distinguishes it from The Boys and similar projects.

“Honestly, Authority's been the hardest, due to the shifting story and finding the right approach in a world with The Boys and similar influences,” Gunn stated. “And also having many beloved characters we've already filmed whose stories we want to continue and see interact. So, it's currently on the back burner.”

The Authority is crucial to the expanding DCU. Announced among the initial DCU projects, María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appears in Superman. The DCU will likely explore the conflict between the optimism of heroes like Superman and The Authority's cynicism. This film's success is vital.

Fortunately, The Authority aligns well with Gunn's style. He excels with misfit heroes and engaging team dynamics. While challenging, Gunn could likely succeed.

Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie

Gunn acknowledged setbacks for the planned Waller series, stating it “has had a couple of setbacks.” This isn't surprising, given his commitments to Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos. As these commitments ease, prioritizing Waller (potentially as a film) might be wise.

Waller and ARGUS are the DCU's current connective tissue. This universe began with the Creature Commandos, led by Waller. ARGUS appears in Superman, and Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo) appears in both Superman and Peacemaker: Season 2. Focusing on this aspect of the DC Universe and its central figure makes sense. If the series isn't working, a film might be a better approach.

Batman & Superman: World’s Finest

Batman v Superman (2016), despite its box office success, fell short of expectations. Audiences tired of the dark tone.

Batman v Superman wasn't what many wanted. Batman and Superman deserve a film showcasing their friendship and alliance against insurmountable threats. Gunn could excel at this.

Instead of solely focusing on The Brave and the Bold, Gunn could unite his Superman with The Brave and the Bold's Batman. The DCU needs reliable hits, and a Gunn-directed Batman/Superman film is a safe bet.

Titans

The Teen Titans franchise boasts a vast fanbase. The success of the comics, animated series, and Teen Titans Go! demonstrates their popularity. Introducing the Titans to the DCU is crucial.

A live-action Titans movie is arguably more appealing than a new Justice League film. The Titans' dysfunctional family dynamic contrasts with the League. Gunn's success with the Guardians suggests he could transform the Titans into a compelling family unit.

Justice League Dark

The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase, featuring Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos, indicates a supernatural focus. Establishing a supernatural counterpart to the Justice League makes sense.

Justice League Dark offers a platform for magical heroes like Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine. Their dysfunction aligns with Gunn's storytelling. Including a character like Batman or Wonder Woman could broaden appeal.
