inZOI introduces a compelling twist: cities can become overrun by ghosts, significantly impacting their vitality. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, inZOI Director Hyungjun Kim highlighted the game's karma system's profound influence on gameplay.

Kim explained that every Zoi action accumulates karma points. Upon death, a karma evaluation determines their afterlife. Low karma results in a ghostly existence, requiring karma redemption before rebirth. The accumulation of these spectral Zois can dramatically alter a city's fate. If ghost populations become too high, new Zois cannot be born, nor can families be formed, placing the burden of maintaining karmic balance squarely on the players' shoulders. This adds a layer of strategic depth, encouraging players to consider the consequences of their Zois' actions.

However, Kim clarified that the system isn't about enforcing strict "good" versus "bad" choices. He emphasized that life's complexities cannot be reduced to such simple binaries, and the karma system is designed to facilitate diverse narratives and explore the multifaceted nature of existence.

Respecting The Sims Legacy

inZOI is poised to be a significant contender in the life simulation genre, potentially challenging the dominance of The Sims. However, Kim doesn't view it as direct competition. He stated that inZOI offers an alternative experience for life sim fans, expressing profound respect for The Sims' enduring legacy and acknowledging the immense challenge of capturing the intricate nuances of life in a video game.
