Fans of the iconic fighting game franchise have been treated to an exciting first glimpse of new characters in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie sequel. Entertainment Weekly recently unveiled images showcasing Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, alongside the return of Hiroyuki Sanada reprising his role as Scorpion.

The anticipation surrounding Karl Urban's portrayal of Johnny Cage, known for his role as Billy Butcher in The Boys, has been high. Fans were eager to see how Urban would embody the egocentric Hollywood star in live action, especially after his image appeared on an in-universe poster for a Cage movie. The newly released image shows a fresh-faced Urban sporting Cage's signature hair and sunglasses, striking a classic martial arts pose. In the background, we see Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.

Entertainment Weekly also shared insights from Ed Boon, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, regarding Johnny Cage's role in the sequel. Boon emphasized the significance of Cage's integration into the story, describing him as a "washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing." He praised Urban's unique take on the character, noting that it adds a fresh and novel element to the film. Boon teased a "ridiculously hilarious" introduction for Johnny Cage, while director Simon McQuoid highlighted the importance of balancing humor with depth in Urban's portrayal, ensuring the character doesn't become too light or throwaway.

In addition to the new characters, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that movie-accurate skins for Urban's Johnny Cage, Rudolph's Kitana, and Ford's Shao Kahn will be available in Mortal Kombat 1 later this year, much to the delight of gamers.

The sequel also introduces Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, with Josh Lawson and Max Huang reprising their roles as Kano and Kung Lao, despite their characters' demise in the first film. Boon explained that the flexible lore of the Mortal Kombat games, which often involves spirits and the NetherRealm, allows for the return of deceased characters.

Rounding out the cast are Tati Gabrielle as Jade and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel. Mortal Kombat 2 is set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, promising an exciting continuation of the beloved franchise.
