LEGO Lord of the Rings: Shire - Epic Quest Begins

LEGO enthusiasts and fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga have a new reason to celebrate as LEGO introduces The Lord of the Rings: The Shire set, launching on April 2 for LEGO Insiders and April 5 for the general public. This is the third installment in LEGO's LOTR series, following the massive 6,167-piece Rivendell in 2023 and the 5,471-piece Barad-dûr in 2024. Priced at $269.99 for 2,017 pieces, The Shire set is both charming and detailed, yet it comes with a higher price tag than expected for its size.

The new 2,017-piece set brings to life Bilbo Baggins' iconic hobbit-hole as seen during his "eleventy-first" birthday celebration. The set features nine minifigures including Bilbo, Frodo, and other beloved characters like Samwise Gamgee and Gandalf the Grey. The design captures the essence of the Shire with its rounded walls and accessory-laden surfaces, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. IGN was provided with a copy for a test build, which confirmed the set's charm but highlighted its disproportionate cost relative to its piece count.

Set #10354 offers a detailed rendition of Bag End, complete with a cutaway view revealing three distinct rooms: the main foyer, a study, and a dining and sitting area. These rooms are built separately and then connected using clamps, ensuring a seamless hillside exterior and a unified interior space. The set is filled with thoughtful touches like patterned rugs, letters, and food, creating a lived-in feel. Additionally, it includes artifacts from Bilbo's adventures, such as the Mithril Coat and a well-worn map, adding depth to the narrative.
A unique feature of the set is a LEGO Technic element that allows you to switch the fireplace display between a charred envelope and the One Ring, referencing a pivotal scene from the Fellowship of the Ring. The set's design focuses on the wide, open spaces typical of hobbit architecture, making it an enjoyable build despite its simplicity compared to Rivendell and Barad-dûr.
The exterior of The Shire set is crafted with multiple curved green pieces, creating a natural landscape that echoes the hobbits' connection to their environment. The set includes several standalone elements like a birthday cake, a Party Tree with lanterns, and a dragon firework, perfect for recreating iconic scenes from the films. There's also a horse-drawn carriage for Gandalf and a mechanism to make Bilbo "disappear" using a group of barrels.
While The Shire set is simpler in construction than its predecessors, its pricing remains a point of contention. At $270, it is 34% above the standard metric of 10 cents per brick, making it feel like a $200 set. In comparison, the larger Rivendell and Barad-dûr sets offer better value per piece. Despite this, The Shire remains the most affordable option for LOTR fans looking to add to their collection.
LEGO's pricing strategy might be testing the waters of customer demand and brand loyalty, especially given the beloved status of The Lord of the Rings. Whether this pricing is sustainable remains to be seen, but the set's aesthetic appeal is undeniable.
