Release Date: May 15
Officially titled LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart, this new set expands the LEGO Mario universe into the world of racing. As part of the larger LEGO Mario series, this release opens the door for future large-scale kart sets—perhaps even a Sports Coupe with Luigi or a Cat Cruiser featuring Princess Peach. The possibilities are exciting!
Building the LEGO Mario Kart Set
Containing 1,972 pieces, this set is divided into 17 numbered bags and features two main builds: the Standard Kart and LEGO Mario himself.
Constructing the Standard Kart
The build begins with the Kart's base, which uses a LEGO Technic mesh framework connected by pins and reinforced with bricks. This forms the sturdy floorboard of the vehicle. From there, you assemble and attach various body components—like the side panels, exhaust pipes (or rockets), and the steering mechanism.
One standout feature is the detailed steering system. It connects to the front of the Kart via clamps and folds onto the hood like a hinged storm door. When the steering wheel is turned, the front wheels rotate in sync—elegant engineering that blends functionality with realism.
Though the final model appears simple and playful, the construction process is surprisingly intricate. Each small step contributes to the overall sophistication of the design, making the build feel rewarding despite its lighthearted aesthetic.
Building LEGO Mario
Mario is constructed using a familiar method seen in previous sets like The Mighty Bowser. Builders start with the torso, which includes ball-and-socket joints for limb attachments. Next come the legs, arms, and finally, the head and hat.
What makes Mario unique is the attention paid to his smaller details. His iconic hat requires two mini-builds to recreate its curved shape. While assembling him, you also notice subtle elements like the hair peeking from under the hat, glove markings, and rolled-up pant cuffs—details often overlooked when viewing the character as a whole.
It's akin to piecing together a famous painting in puzzle form—you begin to appreciate the finer strokes that contribute to the full image.
A Permanent Pair
Unfortunately, Mario cannot be separated from the Kart. His torso connects directly to a gray plate that secures him to the seat. While this may disappoint fans hoping for a standalone figure, it’s understandable from a business perspective—after all, a fully articulated solo Mario would likely be a bestseller on its own.
That said, many LEGO fans will undoubtedly experiment with modifications to make Mario stand independently. For now, though, this setup remains the official configuration.
Final Presentation
The completed model sits on a rotating display stand that can be tilted forward or backward, allowing for dynamic posing. Whether your Kart is climbing uphill, drifting around a curve, or speeding downhill, it looks impressive from every angle.
I enjoy positioning Mario gripping the wheel with one hand and cheering with the other—it almost feels alive with energy and motion.
Looking Ahead
If this set represents the direction of future LEGO Mario releases, then we're in for a treat. Over the past few years, two of the most impressive LEGO sets have been Mario-themed: The Mighty Bowser (2022) and The Piranha Plant (2023). Now, Mario & Standard Kart joins them as another top-tier release, combining build complexity with striking visual appeal.
Set #72037 will launch exclusively at the LEGO Store on May 15, so be sure to [ttpp]preorder now[/ttpp] before it sells out.
