Life by You: Unseen Screenshots Reveal What Could Have Been

Life by You's Cancellation: A Look at What Could Have Been
The abrupt cancellation of Paradox Interactive's Life by You continues to resonate with fans. Recently surfaced screenshots, shared by former developers on platforms like Twitter (X) and personal websites, offer a poignant glimpse into the game's potential.
These images, compiled by @SimMattically, showcase the work of artists like Richard Kho, Eric Maki, and Chris Lewis, who detailed their contributions, including animation, scripting, lighting, modding tools, shaders, and VFX on platforms such as GitHub.
While the visuals don't drastically deviate from the final gameplay trailer, fans highlight noticeable improvements. The screenshots reveal refined character models with enhanced customization options, including improved sliders and presets. Clothing options appear more diverse and seasonally appropriate. Furthermore, the game world boasts a richer level of detail and atmosphere than previously shown.
One fan expressed the widespread disappointment, stating, "We were all superexcited and impatient; and then we all ended up extremely disappointed… :( Could have been a great game!"
Paradox Interactive's explanation for the cancellation cited significant development challenges. Deputy CEO Mattias Lilja stated that the game was "lacking in some key areas," making a timely and satisfactory release improbable. CEO Fredrik Wester echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team's dedication but acknowledging the insurmountable hurdles to reaching a desired quality.
The cancellation of Life by You, intended as a PC competitor to The Sims, surprised many given the pre-release excitement. The project's termination also resulted in the closure of Paradox Tectonic, the studio behind the game. The released screenshots serve as a bittersweet reminder of a promising title lost to development challenges.
