Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new game on Android that combines the fast-paced action of pixel art with the engaging mechanics of a 'snakelike' roguelike. Dubbed MageTrain, this game is a delightful nod to the classic Nimble Quest, drawing significant inspiration from it.

What’s MageTrain Like?

MageTrain ingeniously blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes to deliver an exciting gaming experience. In this game, you maneuver a line of heroes that trail behind you, much like a snake, each automatically attacking as you navigate through an arena. Your strategic role involves positioning your heroes effectively, determining who leads and who supports, as their abilities vary based on their position in the line.

At launch, MageTrain offers nine unique heroes, one of whom amusingly throws birds. Each hero possesses distinct skills that adapt according to their placement in the formation. The gameplay spans eight diverse dungeons, where you’ll encounter 28 different enemy types and have access to 30 skills to enhance your team. Along your journey, you'll collect gold and power-ups to bolster your chances of success.

The roguelike structure ensures each run is unique, with branching paths and upgrade choices that keep the game fresh and challenging. Similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL, there are no fixed levels, and you can't save your progress mid-game. A single mistake, such as colliding with an obstacle or being overrun by enemies, means starting anew.

It Isn’t Slow-Paced

The appeal of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even if you don't make it to the end. You learn when to play defensively, when to go all-out offensively, and when to simply hold on for another 30 seconds.
