Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the return of Marvel vs. Capcom 2's original characters in a new game is "always a possibility." This follows the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection of classic titles which Matsumoto is producing.

The Marvel vs. Capcom series features characters from both Capcom and Marvel universes. The recently announced Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection includes six classic games, notably Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This game introduced three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon, largely absent from later iterations beyond minor cameos.

At EVO 2024, Matsumoto suggested the collection could reignite interest in these characters. He stated, "Yeah, there's always a possibility. This is a great opportunity; the collection will familiarize more people with these characters." He further hinted at their potential appearance outside the Versus series, saying, "If there's enough interest, maybe they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." He sees this as a boost to Capcom's creative pool, expanding content possibilities.

Matsumoto revealed that the Fighting Collection has been in the works for three or four years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. He emphasized the team's long-held desire to re-release these classic titles, citing timing and collaboration as previous hurdles.

He also expressed Capcom's ambition to create a new Versus series title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with features like rollback netcode. He stated, "We have many legacy fighting games fans want re-released, and the feeling is mutual on our side."

Matsumoto concluded by highlighting the importance of re-releasing classic titles to energize the community, acknowledging the necessary collaborations and potential time constraints involved.
