Best Ways To Use the Great Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Great Sword is the epitome of raw power in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. This heavy weapon may be slow to swing, but its capacity for dealing massive damage with a single hit is unparalleled. Mastering the timing and technique of your attacks is crucial for maximizing the Great Sword's potential. As you progress, upgrades will enhance its power and introduce elemental bonuses, making it even more formidable.
All Moves
Command | Move | Description |
---|---|---|
Triangle/Y | Overhead Slash | An immediate overhead attack that can be charged for further combos. |
Holding down Triangle/Y | Charge/Charged Slash | A powerful slash that increases in strength with longer charge time. |
Holding down Triangle/Y + Circle/B | Tackle | A rising slash that can counter monster attacks. Timing a release with a monster's attack can knock it down. Follow up with a Cross Slash using Triangle/Y. |
Circle/B | Wide Slash | A broad slashing attack. Chain into a Leaping Wide Slash from a Tackle, or into a Strong Wide Slash from a Strong Charged Slash. |
Triangle/Y + Circle/B | Rising Slash | A high-reaching slash perfect for targeting elevated monster parts. |
Holding down Triangle/Y + Circle/B | Offset Rising Slash | Charge and release to counter monster attacks, knocking them down. Follow up with a Cross Slash. |
R2/RT | Guard | Defensive stance using the Great Sword's blade. Adjust direction with Focus Mode. |
R2/RT + Triangle/Y | Kick | Perform a kick while guarding by pressing Triangle/Y. |
L2/LT + R1/RB | Focus Slash/Perforate | A sweeping attack effective against wounds and weak points. Press R1/RB to end early. |
Combos
True Charged Slash Combo
Initiate this combo with three consecutive presses of Triangle/Y, starting with an Overhead Slash, followed by a Strong Charged Slash, and culminating in a True Charged Slash. Charging each slash increases its damage, indicated by the hunter flashing white, yellow, and red. A True Charged Slash on a monster's soft spot triggers the True Charged Slash (Power), enhancing damage. After hitting the combo, dodge and press Triangle/Y to tackle, skipping the initial Overhead Slash and transitioning directly to the Strong Charged Slash for quicker, more damaging attacks.
Forward Lunging Combo
This combo is started with three presses of Circle/B, executing a Wide Slash, a Tackle, and a Leaping Wide Slash. Ideal for targeting elusive monsters, it covers a wide area while delivering significant damage. Utilizing Focus Mode can ensure hits on weak spots and wounds, maximizing effectiveness.
Stationary Combo
When a monster is paralyzed, use this combo by alternating a Wide Slash and a Rising Slash twice for a quick four-hit sequence. While not the most damaging, it keeps pressure on the monster.

Guard and Counters
Offset Rising Slash
While effective against tall monsters, the Rising Slash truly shines as a counter. Press Triangle/Y and Circle/B simultaneously to unleash the Rising Slash, and hold to charge. Release as a monster attacks to knock it down, then follow with a Cross Slash. Mastering the timing is essential to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
Guarding
Guarding with the Great Sword by holding R2/RT reduces damage at the cost of stamina. A well-timed guard can result in a Perfect Guard, negating all damage and accompanied by visual and sound cues. However, it won't stop the monster, so be ready to chain guards during its combos. Occasionally, a Perfect Guard can lead to a Power Clash, where mashing Circle/B can overpower the monster, knocking it down for further attacks.
With these strategies and techniques, you're well on your way to mastering the Great Sword in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. For more tips and guides, be sure to visit The Escapist.
