Minecraft Creator Hints at Minecraft 2: A Spiritual Successor in the Works?

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential "Minecraft 2" is on the horizon. While not a direct sequel due to IP rights held by Microsoft, Notch's recent poll and statements indicate a strong possibility of a spiritually similar game.

A Poll and a Potential Revelation

On January 1st, Notch posted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) outlining his current work on a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) and first-person dungeon crawler mechanics (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he also included the option of developing a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft. The results overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft-inspired project, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes.

Subsequently, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had essentially "announced Minecraft 2." He acknowledged the massive popularity of the original Minecraft and expressed his enthusiasm for returning to a similar creative space. He emphasized that while he's open to creating either game first, the strong fan preference for a Minecraft-esque title heavily influences his decision.

Respecting Mojang and Microsoft's ownership of the Minecraft IP, Notch assured fans that any new project would avoid direct infringement. He understands and respects Mojang's continued work on the original Minecraft and Microsoft's involvement.

Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges inherent in creating spiritual successors, acknowledging the potential for falling short of expectations. Despite these reservations, the overwhelming fan desire and potential financial success are driving forces behind his consideration.
