Monster Hunter: Adapt Your Playstyle with Weapon Choice
For newcomers to Monster Hunter, the sudden success of Wilds might seem like it came out of nowhere. However, Capcom has been meticulously refining its massively successful Monster Hunter series for years, aiming for global domination. The result is what appears to be one of the best-selling games in the series to date.
With over a million concurrent players on Steam, it's clear that everyone is diving into Monster Hunter Wilds. If you're feeling like an outsider unsure of where to start, I have a simple trick to maximize your enjoyment: find the weapon that best aligns with your preferred playstyle.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, players are immediately presented with an almost overwhelming array of weapons, each boasting unique playstyles. Whether you're drawn to heavy, brutish weapons like the Great Sword, prefer something more agile such as the Dual Blades, or lean towards ranged options like the Bowgun, there's something for everyone.
There's a natural inclination, perhaps due to its iconic status, to start with large swords and switch axes. However, these cumbersome weapons require a specific approach, emphasizing precise swings over brute force, making them challenging for beginners. Instead, consider starting with something more nimble, like the Dual Blades. These weapons unlock a world of swift attacks and dodges, transforming the gameplay experience. When wielding a big sword, Monster Hunter feels akin to the methodical combat of Dark Souls, but with Dual Blades, it echoes the action-packed style of Devil May Cry.
Compared to its predecessors, Wilds adjusts its combat to align more closely with modern action games. While you still need to sheathe your weapon to heal, the combat feels more intuitive for those accustomed to recent action RPGs. The critical aspect here is choosing a weapon that suits your playstyle. Unlike other action RPGs where customization comes through skill trees, in Monster Hunter, your weapon choice defines your experience.
The weapon you select at the outset shapes your entire journey. If you crave a fast-paced, combo-heavy experience reminiscent of Dante from Devil May Cry, the Dual Blades are your go-to. They rely on quick attacks, agile dodges, and building a meter that, once full, unleashes a rapid combo on downed enemies.
Conversely, if you prefer a weapon that delivers heavy damage while maintaining defense and mobility, the sword and shield is an excellent starting point. The lance, though less popular due to its focus on defense over flashy attacks, offers a unique combat experience with its parries and counter-attacks, rewarding practice and patience.
Ranged weapons like the Bowguns are equally potent and, if chosen, ensure you pack sufficient ammo and select the best type for the specific monster you're facing.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapons, each with distinct abilities and characteristics, categorized broadly into heavy, light, and technical types. Heavy weapons trade speed for massive damage, light weapons excel in rapid attacks, and technical weapons offer unique mechanics. Some weapons, like the Gunlance, blend range with melee capabilities, while the Charge Blade can switch between a large axe and a smaller blade. The Insect Glaive and Hunting Horn provide unique buffs with the right combos.
With such a vast selection, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. However, don't rush your decision. Take advantage of the game's tutorial to try out each weapon before committing. You're sure to find the perfect fit, whether you're aiming to unleash chaos like Dante or adopt a strategic approach akin to Dark Souls.
