Season 5 Marks the Final Chapter for MultiVersus

On January 31, 2025, the official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account confirmed the game will permanently cease operations on May 30, 2025, following its fifth and final season. A blog post from Player First Games and Warner Bros. stated, "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."

MultiVersus Season 5 will run from February 4, 2025, until May 30, 2025, introducing two new playable characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. According to the blog, “All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay.” After Season 5 concludes, the game will no longer be downloadable from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.

No official reason has been provided for MultiVersus shutting down.

Transitioning to MultiVersus’ Offline Mode

Once Season 5 ends, players can continue to enjoy MultiVersus offline using the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends. To access this feature, players need to download the latest version of the game during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST until May 30 at 9 AM PDT.

After logging in, the game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player’s PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account. This enables continued offline play with all previously unlocked and purchased content.

MultiVersus discontinued real-money transactions on January 31, 2025. Gleamium, the game’s premium currency, can no longer be bought from the online store. Players with remaining Gleamium can use it to acquire in-game items until Season 5 ends.

MultiVersus Launched Public Beta in 2022

MultiVersus began its public beta in July 2022, presenting players with a free-to-play fighting game often likened to Super Smash Bros., yet unique for its team-based 2v2 format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open beta delivered multiple updates and two full seasons of content. The game was officially relaunched in May 2024, introducing new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, additional currencies, and more.

Even with the improvements brought by the relaunch, many players remained unsatisfied with the game’s overall performance. Common complaints cited technical problems, frequent disconnects, and the game's microtransactions. In July 2024, MultiVersus reportedly experienced a 70% drop in active players on PS4 and PS5.

MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, leaving behind a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed, “We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

MultiVersus remains downloadable on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
