Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida recently confirmed on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast that abandoning the multiplayer project allowed full development focus on Intergalactic.

Yoshida revealed that advice from Bungie, creators of Destiny, played a crucial role in the decision. "Bungie helped us understand the immense commitment required for live-service games," Yoshida explained.
