Netflix Cancels Six Indie Games, Including Don’t Starve Together

Netflix has been making some significant strategic shifts in its gaming division, and recent announcements have left fans both excited and disappointed. The streaming giant unveiled its upcoming lineup of shows and games for the year, but keen observers noticed the absence of several eagerly awaited titles.
Six Games Removed from Netflix's Mobile Lineup
Netflix Games has decided to drop six previously announced titles from its mobile gaming portfolio. Fans eagerly anticipating playing Don’t Starve Together, Tales of the Shire, Compass Point: West, Lab Rat, Rotwood, and Thirsty Suitors through Netflix will need to look elsewhere for these experiences. This move is part of Netflix's ongoing effort to refine its gaming offerings, and unfortunately, these titles did not meet the company's current criteria.
This isn't the first time Netflix has pulled the plug on games after initial announcements. Crashlands 2, which had even entered beta testing in some regions, was similarly removed from the lineup.
A Shift in Strategy
Netflix's decision reflects a broader shift in its gaming strategy, with a clear move towards narrative-driven games and titles tied to their popular shows and movies. This is evident with the introduction of Netflix Stories, which will feature popular series like Ginny & Georgia and Sweet Magnolias this year.
What About the Promised Games?
Despite their removal from Netflix Games, most of these titles are still set to launch on other platforms. Don’t Starve Together, initially announced in June 2024 as part of a trio of Klei Entertainment games coming to Netflix, will now be available on mobile through Playdigious. Similarly, Lab Rat and Rotwood have been dropped from Netflix's plans, but Rotwood remains accessible on Steam in early access.
Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, a cozy life sim, faced a delay from its planned fall 2024 launch to early 2025. The absence of the Netflix Games logo from its website further confirms its departure from the Netflix lineup.
Compass Point: West, developed by Next Games—a company owned by Netflix—was among the first titles announced for the platform, making its cancellation particularly notable.
Lastly, Thirsty Suitors, a stylish, story-driven RPG developed by Outerloop Games and published by Annapurna Interactive, was set to come to mobile via Netflix but is now out of the picture.
Where to Go from Here?
While these cancellations may disappoint some fans, Netflix continues to offer a variety of gaming experiences on the Google Play Store. For those interested in Netflix's evolving gaming landscape, keep an eye out for updates on their narrative-driven offerings and games inspired by their popular shows.
