NieR: Automata - Death Penalty Explained
Quick Links
NieR: Automata, despite its appearance, incorporates unforgiving rogue-like mechanics. Death can severely hinder progress, potentially resulting in the permanent loss of valuable items and significant setbacks, especially in the late game. However, hope isn't lost immediately; you have a chance to recover your losses before they vanish completely. Let's explore what happens upon death and how to recover your body to minimize the impact.
Death Penalty In NieR: Automata Explained
Dying in NieR: Automata means losing all XP earned since your last save, and, critically, all currently equipped Plug-In Chips. While you can always find replacement chips and recreate your loadout, some are rare and expensive to acquire, making loss significant. Respawning leaves your equipped Plug-In slots empty, requiring re-equipping or selecting a preset.
The lost Plug-In Chips aren't gone forever. You have one chance to retrieve them by recovering your body. Failure to do so before another death results in the permanent loss of those chips.
Recovering Your Body In NieR: Automata
After death, your immediate priority is recovering your body. A blue body icon on the map indicates its location. Approaching and interacting with it restores your Plug-In Chips. You then face a choice:
This option doesn't restore lost XP, but transforms your old body into an AI companion until its demise.
This option restores the XP lost since your last save.
Regardless of your choice, you can re-equip your recovered Plug-In Chips, overriding your current setup, or simply add them back to your inventory.
