Nintendo Consoles Ranked: A Tier List

With the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has officially announced the arrival of its latest gaming console. Boasting over four decades of experience in video game hardware, the excitement is palpable as we eagerly anticipate what innovations Nintendo will bring to the table, even if initial impressions suggest a more conservative approach. If you're eagerly awaiting this next-generation console, we've analyzed all the details from the Switch 2 trailer right here. But before we dive into the future, let's take a nostalgic journey back through Nintendo's storied history.
Over the past five decades, Nintendo has launched eight home consoles, including the NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and the Switch, alongside five handhelds such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, and 3DS. But which of these stands out as the best? I've crafted a personal ranking using an IGN Tier List, considering both the innovation of the hardware and the quality and legacy of the games each console brought us. Check out my tier list below:
The NES holds a special place in my heart as my first gaming console, evoking fond memories of classics like Super Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, and the challenging Hook. It's no surprise I place it in the S tier. Meanwhile, the Switch's innovative hybrid design, despite the issue of stick drift, and its stellar lineup including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Odyssey, earns it a spot alongside the NES at the top.
Disagree with my rankings? Perhaps you believe the Virtual Boy surpasses the N64? Feel free to create your own tier list and see how your S, A, B, C, and D rankings compare with the IGN community.
