Nintendo has made the unprecedented decision to postpone Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S., citing the effects of Trump-era tariffs and "changing market dynamics."

Pre-orders were originally scheduled to begin in the U.S. on April 9. While Nintendo hasn't announced a new date, the company confirmed the Switch 2 will maintain its June 5, 2025 release window.

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not begin on April 9, 2025 as we evaluate the potential effects of tariffs and shifting market conditions. We'll share updated timing information shortly. The June 5, 2025 launch date remains unchanged.

The delay specifically affects the U.S. market - pre-order schedules in other regions like the UK remain on track.

Nintendo previously announced the Switch 2 would retail for $449.99, with a Mario Kart World bundle priced at $499.99. The standalone Mario Kart World game carries a $79.99 price point.

Former Nintendo of America PR executives Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang criticized the company's pricing approach in a YouTube video, particularly the $449.99 console price and $79.99 game price revealed during this week's Nintendo Direct.

"This feels like a critical moment for Nintendo," Ellis commented.

The delay comes as global trade tensions escalate, with China implementing 34% retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in response to Trump's 54% import tax on Chinese products.

Market analysts warn these trade policies could signal the end of affordable consumer electronics, as manufacturers typically pass tariff costs to consumers through higher pricing.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad noted that while Nintendo had moved some Switch 2 production to Vietnam to avoid Chinese tariffs, unexpected tariffs on Vietnamese and Japanese imports may force global price adjustments.

"The tariff situation has developed differently than anticipated," Ahmad explained. "If these measures take full effect, Nintendo will need to adjust its financial projections accordingly."
