"Nintendo Reveals Donkey Kong Bananza Direct This Week"
With the official launch of the Switch 2 now public knowledge, Nintendo is shifting its promotional efforts toward showcasing high-profile exclusives arriving on the new platform. Up next in line is Donkey Kong Bananza, set to release globally on July 17. As confirmed by Nintendo, this Direct will exclusively highlight details about this 3D platforming adventure title—meaning no other Switch 2 games, whether previously revealed or yet-to-be-announced, will make an appearance during the livestream.
As part of the fresh direction for the franchise, Donkey Kong debuts a newly refined look in Bananza, inspired by his updated design from the blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie. In a recent interview with IGN, Nintendo's iconic game designer Shigeru Miyamoto shed light on the creative evolution behind the character's redesign.
"I still take an active role in character creation and development," Miyamoto explained. "Looking back at the original Donkey Kong Country generation, we collaborated with Rare to bring that vision to life. When considering how to evolve Donkey Kong further, we revisited earlier projects like Jungle Beat, working alongside the team behind modern 3D Mario titles."
He continued, "Thanks to advancements in technology, we were able to make Donkey Kong more expressive. We reevaluated the original Rare design, exploring ways to enhance it while staying true to the spirit of the character. That process ultimately led us to adopt this updated visual style for the movie—and later for future games, including Donkey Kong Bananza."

This release marks a key moment for the Switch 2 as Nintendo continues to build out its exclusive lineup. Alongside launch titles such as Mario Kart World and Welcome Tour, the console will also feature exclusive experiences like Survival Kids, the anticipated Kirby Air Riders, and the recently unveiled Splatoon Raiders. With Donkey Kong Bananza entering the mix, Nintendo aims to solidify the Switch 2’s early library with a diverse range of flagship titles.
