Nintendo Subpoenas Discord to Identify User Behind Pokemon "TeraLeak"

Nintendo is actively seeking to uncover the identity behind the significant Pokemon data leak known as the "FreakLeak" or "TeraLeak" from last year. The company has requested a subpoena from a California court, aiming to compel Discord to disclose personal information about a user known as "GameFreakOUT". This individual is believed to have shared sensitive materials, including copyrighted artwork, characters, source code, and other Pokemon-related content, on a Discord server called "FreakLeak" last October. These materials subsequently spread widely across the internet.

The leaked content likely originated from a data breach disclosed by Game Freak in October, which affected 2,606 current, former, and contract employees. Interestingly, the leaked files surfaced online on October 12, and Game Freak's statement, dated October 10 but released the following day, only mentioned the breach of employee information without referencing other confidential company materials.

The "FreakLeak" exposed details about several unannounced projects, including cut content, background information, and early builds of various Pokemon games. It notably revealed information about "Pokemon Champions", a battle-focused game officially announced in February, and provided accurate details about "Pokemon Legends: Z-A", along with unverified information about the next Pokemon generation, source code for DS Pokemon titles, meeting summaries, and cut lore from "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" and other titles.

Although Nintendo has not yet initiated legal action against any hacker or leaker, the subpoena suggests a strong intent to identify and potentially pursue legal action against the person responsible. Given Nintendo's history of aggressively litigating issues related to piracy and patent infringement, it is anticipated that if the subpoena is granted, further legal steps may follow.
