Nintendo Switch 2: Some Game Cards to Feature Download Keys Only

Nintendo has officially announced that the new Nintendo Switch 2 game cards will sometimes include just a key for downloading the game, rather than containing the game data itself. This new approach to physical game cartridges was outlined in a customer support post released soon after the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct this morning. With the Switch 2 set to launch in June, fans can continue to buy physical games, but there are important details to be aware of.
The customer support post elaborates on the concept of game-key cards, which are physical cards that only contain a download key. When you insert one into your Switch 2, you'll need an internet connection to download the game. These cards will be clearly labeled on the front of the box, providing clear indication of what you're buying.
The news has stirred some concern among fans who value the traditional plug-and-play experience without the need for downloads. There's worry that these game-key cards could eventually replace standard cartridges entirely. However, current evidence suggests this might not be the case.
Some early box art for games like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster include the game-key card disclaimer, while others such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not. It seems that Nintendo might reserve this method for larger games that could benefit from a key-based approach, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will launch with a 64 GB game card on the Switch 2's launch day.
During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo highlighted the advanced technology of the new red game cards, boasting faster data reading speeds than those of the original 2017 console. This emphasis on improved hardware suggests that not all cartridges will be simple key containers. Nintendo has previously used a similar approach with games like LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch, which required additional downloads.
As the launch date of June 5, 2025, approaches, more details about the use of game-key cards will become clear. For a comprehensive look at everything revealed during today's Direct, click here. To explore the new tech features of the Nintendo Switch 2, click here.
