Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Hints at Rotatable Joy-Cons, Upside Down Play

A newly filed Nintendo patent hints at innovative Joy-Con functionality for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The patent suggests the controllers will utilize magnets for attachment, allowing them to be mounted upside down on the console.

As reported by VGC, this design will mirror the gyro-sensor functionality of smartphones, dynamically adjusting the screen orientation regardless of controller placement. This magnetic attachment, unlike the original Switch's rail system, offers increased flexibility.

The upside-down mounting won't drastically alter the hardware, but it will provide players with customizable button and port placement. This could potentially unlock unique gameplay mechanics, a possibility that will likely be explored further. The patent explicitly states: "The user can use the game system by mounting the right controller and the left controller on the opposite side to the main body device," and further explains the flexibility regarding headphone jack placement.

Further details are anticipated during the upcoming Nintendo Direct event on April 2nd (6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time). While Nintendo hasn't confirmed a release window, speculation points towards a launch between June and September, fueled by pre-release events and industry statements.

The Switch 2's January reveal showcased backward compatibility and a second USB-C port, but many features, including the function of a new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. The "Joy-Con mouse" theory, however, has gained some traction.
