Hori's officially licensed Piranha Plant Camera for the Nintendo Switch 2 features a surprisingly low 480p resolution, which is significantly lower than the 1080p quality of Nintendo's own official camera accessory.

While the Hori Piranha Plant camera is more affordable than Nintendo's $49.99 model, it's important to remember that the Switch 2 is compatible with its own official camera or any other compatible USB-C webcam. Both the official and Piranha Plant cameras are scheduled to launch with the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera offers some unique flexibility. The webcam unit can be detached from the pot base, allowing you to place it directly on top of the console for better portability—a feature the official camera doesn't have. You can also close the plant's mouth to cover the lens when not in use.

Nintendo fans were surprised to learn about the 480p resolution of the Piranha Plant camera. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" asked redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be more difficult than manufacturing a 1080p camera."

"That's actually hilarious," joked LizardsoftheGhost. "Maybe they intended to release this back during the Wii U era."

Last week's Nintendo Direct presentation introduced the Switch 2's GameChat feature, which is activated by pressing the new C button on the updated Joy-Con.

This feature lets players watch each other's gameplay, whether they are playing the same game or different ones, and with a connected camera, they can even see each other. A built-in microphone enhances the experience, reportedly performing reliably in various gaming environments. The C button's integrated chat menu serves as a comprehensive multiplayer hub, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online feature in years.
