Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti vs. AMD RX 9070 XT: Battle of GPUs

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 may reign supreme at the top of the graphics card market, but its hefty $1,999+ price tag is beyond the reach of many gamers. Fortunately, you don't need to break the bank to enjoy 4K gaming. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT offer compelling alternatives, delivering robust 4K gaming experiences at a more affordable cost.

While current prices are inflated due to high demand and limited supply post-launch, the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT stand out as the go-to choices for those seeking high-end gaming performance without the exorbitant cost.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Specs

Comparing the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT directly based on specs can be challenging due to their differing architectures. Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units, though similar in function, aren't directly comparable in terms of quantity.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT features 64 RDNA 4 compute units, each with 64 shader units, totaling 4,096. Each compute unit also includes two AI Accelerators and one RT Accelerator, resulting in 128 and 64, respectively. This is paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, sufficient for current games, though potentially stretched at 4K resolutions in the future.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, on the other hand, also boasts 16GB of memory but uses the faster GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus, offering higher bandwidth. It contains 70 Streaming Multiprocessors, each with 128 CUDA Cores, totaling 8,960 CUDA Cores. This architecture has been Nvidia's strength since the RTX 3080, though it doesn't necessarily translate to double the performance.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Performance

Despite the RTX 5070 Ti's impressive specs, actual performance doesn't always reflect the numbers. Both the RTX 5070 Ti and the RX 9070 XT excel as entry-level cards for 4K gaming and are among the top choices for 1440p gaming.

During my review of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, I anticipated it would trail behind the RTX 5070 Ti, especially in ray-tracing-intensive games. However, the AMD card consistently delivered performance within a few frames of the more expensive Nvidia counterpart, even in demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077.

There are instances where the RTX 5070 Ti outperforms, such as in Total War: Warhammer 3, achieving 87fps at 4K compared to the RX 9070 XT's 76fps. Yet, the RX 9070 XT averaged 2% faster performance overall, a significant advantage considering its 21% lower theoretical cost.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Software and Features

Choosing the right graphics card today involves more than just hardware specs. Both Nvidia and AMD provide software suites that enhance what their GPUs can do.

The Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti's key advantage lies in its DLSS features, including AI upscaling and Frame Generation. With the RTX 5000 series, Nvidia introduced multi-frame generation, capable of generating three frames for each naturally rendered frame, boosting frame rates but adding some latency, mitigated by Nvidia Reflex. This feature is best utilized when already achieving at least 45fps, preferably over 60fps.

AMD's RX 9070 XT supports Frame Generation but only produces one interpolated frame per rendered frame. Its significant advancement is FSR 4, introducing AI upscaling to AMD cards for the first time. Previously, FSR relied on temporal upscaling, which was effective but could result in less sharp images. FSR 4 utilizes the card's AI accelerators for machine learning-based upscaling, improving image quality, though not as fast as the previous FSR iterations.

It's worth noting that FSR 4 is AMD's first venture into AI upscaling, while Nvidia has refined DLSS over seven years.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Price

The pricing of GPUs is a contentious issue, with new generation cards often sold out and prices inflated. Both Nvidia and AMD set suggested retail prices, but retailers and third-party manufacturers can set their own. While it's hard to predict future prices, we hope they'll align more closely with MSRP as supply improves.

At its launch price of $599, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is a stellar choice for 4K gaming, capable of running any game with max settings, especially when paired with the new FSR 4 AI upscaler. This price point harks back to when flagship GPUs were more affordable, before Nvidia's gradual price hikes starting with the RTX 2080 Ti.

In contrast, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, which competes closely with the RX 9070 XT, has a base price of $749, a substantial $150 more. While it offers features like Multi-Frame Generation, the value depends on your specific gaming needs and the titles you play.

Winner: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

The Winner Is… the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti excel in 1440p gaming and can handle 4K gaming well. However, the RX 9070 XT's ability to deliver similar performance at a significantly lower price makes it the clear winner, especially if prices normalize.

For those building a gaming PC focused on high-end 1440p or venturing into 4K, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is an outstanding choice. While it lacks multi-frame generation, this feature is less critical for most users without high-refresh 4K monitors.
