Orpheus' Fate: A Critical Decision in Baldur's Gate 3
In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the story's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after obtaining the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.

This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (30+) are needed for certain interactions to influence companion choices.

Free Orpheus or Side with the Emperor?
This decision hinges on player preference. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
After the Netherbrain encounter, the Astral Prism presents the choice: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is assimilated, potentially upsetting Lae'zel and Karlach due to its impact on their personal quests. While this ensures victory over the Netherbrain, it might not appeal to players invested in these companions.

Freeing Orpheus: The Emperor aligns with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight, and if asked, will willingly sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.
In short: choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus to risk it. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
The Moral High Ground?
Morality is subjective. Orpheus's claim as rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny, makes siding with him appealing, especially for Githyanki characters. However, the Emperor's desire to stop the Netherbrain and aid the party presents a compelling alternative. The Emperor's path might lead to becoming a Mind Flayer, but it's a morally sound path to achieving a greater good, even with sacrifice. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, so strategic choices can lead to favorable outcomes.
