Owlcat Games has unveiled The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a story-driven action RPG set in the universe of the acclaimed sci-fi television series. This marks a strategic shift for the studio, known for critically acclaimed isometric RPGs like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, as it ventures into Mass Effect-style territory with over-the-shoulder third-person combat, cover-based shooting mechanics, class abilities, squad management, and romantic companion relationships.

A New Frontier for Owlcat

Series fans can expect appearances from familiar characters, with several original actors reportedly reprising their roles (though none were officially confirmed). Players assume the role of a Pinkwater Security mercenary caught in Eros Station's deadly quarantine. The adventure expands to crew management, starship command, and system-wide navigation across the solar system.

"This project fulfills our long-held ambition to create a sci-fi action RPG of this magnitude," said Owlcat Creative Director Alexander Mishulin. "The Expanse's grounded yet complex universe perfectly aligns with our storytelling approach – mature character-driven narratives where player choices carry real weight. We're eager to share more details soon, knowing our community will have many questions."

Game Design Producer Yuliya Chernenko acknowledged the Mass Effect trilogy's influence: "That series defined an era for our generation of developers. Its legacy inspires us as we push modern expectations further –combining hard sci-fi authenticity with tactical combat, political intrigue, moral dilemmas, and yes, meaningful relationships."

Gameplay & Setting Details

Players create a custom captain (choosing between Earther, Martian, or Belter origins) to command humanity's most advanced warship. The crew system features companions with complex backstories and narrative influence, while combat blends real-time cover mechanics with special abilities and squad tactics (fielding two active companions with others providing support).

The game revisits iconic locations from the series and novels including Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna. Set concurrently with events from the show's first two seasons (or first two novels), the narrative explores the same tense political landscape and human drama that defines the franchise.

While no release date has been announced, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will launch on Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Despite concurrent development on Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader DLC, Owlcat confirms this represents their flagship project with a dedicated development team.
