Overwatch 2: 6v6 Playtest Expanded!
Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Transition to Open Queue
Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest, initially slated to end January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will shift to an open queue format.
The 6v6 mode, initially introduced during last year's Overwatch Classic event, quickly became a fan favorite. Its initial run, though brief, demonstrated significant player engagement. Following a second playtest (December 17th - January 6th), the decision to extend the test period reflects the continued strong player interest. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 mode will soon move to the Arcade section.
The mid-season transition to open queue will require teams to field 1-3 heroes of each class. This change, following the successful role queue playtest, aims to further gauge player response in a less restrictive environment.
The Future of 6v6 in Overwatch 2
The enduring appeal of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's launch, the return to 6v6 has been a frequently requested feature. The shift to 5v5 gameplay in the sequel significantly altered the game's dynamics, a change that resonates differently with various players.
The extended playtest fuels hope for 6v6's permanent integration into Overwatch 2, potentially even within the competitive playlist. The outcome will likely depend on the data gathered from the ongoing open queue testing phase.
